Introduction<\/a> <\/p>\n Manfrotto PL-3N1-36 Pro Light Sling Camera\/Drone Backpack Review<\/b><\/p>\n A good attempt on a familiar core design but needs further refinement.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Manfrotto PL-3N1-36 Pro Light Sling Camera\/Drone backpack is a rather large, good looking backpack that feels light due to the materials it has chosen to use. It looks well designed and well built from the surface based on its colors, materials and the overall feel of the bag when you handle it. But after closer inspection, and loading it with the gear I plan to use it with, I noticed many disappointing flaws.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before I decided on purchasing the Manfrotto backpack, I first outlined a list of requirements that I would like the backpack to meet.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In general, most camera backpacks I have researched online such as Ebay, Amazon, YouTube, Gumtree, B&H Photo, AliExpress, online reviews, various online stores, etc. have similar core design. They are either any of the following combinations of top opening, side openings, front opening, back opening, front or side tripod attachments, etc. and due to this, choosing the right backpack can be a little daunting. To makes matters worse, you also need to consider other important factors like size, how it fits to your body, flexibility of the inner compartments and dividers, durability and quality of materials and stitching used, functionality and features, etc. which can make it difficult if you are mostly researching your ideal bag online.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I decided to purchase the Manfrotto backpack based on its reputation and large size, with consideration that I may use it for travel. My only concern was the 28cms depth of the bag as it exceeds carry-on dimensions of all the airlines I have used so far. Most airline restrictions are for a depth of 23cms or 25cms but I considered the possibility that I may be able to squeeze the depth smaller by ensuring no items are stored in the front, if the bag has to be measured at the airport using those drop-in carry-on measuring frames.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I was re-considering the Lowepro Protactic 450 DSLR backpack before deciding on the Manfrotto, as it was only about $35 AUD more, at the time of my research, but decided not to, due to the poor experience I had with the imitation. By design, the Lowepro Protactic 450 camera backpack has thin shoulder straps which could possibly lead to poor durability. I do not believe the Protactic’s light padding on the back support and shoulder straps would make it very comfortable to use when the bag is fully loaded with my equipment.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This review will not be focusing on describing all the features and functions of the Manfrotto 3n1-36 DSLR\/Drone backpack but rather on the distinct Pros and Cons that I found.<\/p>\n Introduction<\/a><\/p>\n Equipment Used,\u00a0Roomy Interior<\/a> I will be basing my opinions with consideration to the following equipment;<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The backpack is large in size and is slightly bigger than the Lowepro Protactic 450 AW Camera Backpack. Its cube like shape allows for maximum use of space and gives the ability to sit upright or on its back or front when placed on the ground.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Even with the equipment listed, there were still room for additional items which could be accessories like lens blower, lens pen, ND or Polarizer lens filters, action camera, light clothing like a shirt, socks, etc.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Manfrotto Pro Light 3n1-36 Camera backpack can house at least a 15 inch laptop and possibly greater as there was ample room when storing a 13 inch Macbook Pro.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> There are some clever features on this backpack which makes this backpack more streamlined, and carrying this backpack more comfortable and supportive than other backpacks I have used.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Waist Straps can be tucked away inside the back support to provide better lumbar support in use.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bottom shoulder strap covers, slides into place to help hide any shoulder strap extras when adjusting the shoulder straps to a smaller size body. This creates a much cleaner look but can make it tedious when changing strap configurations from backpack, sling or cross chest as it covers the detachable buckles.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There is a trolley strap that allows you to mount this backpack to a wheeled luggage which can be used with firm wheeled luggage that have a two pole handle design.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There is a facility to attach a monopod onto the side of the backpack.<\/p>\n The monopod foot pouch is rather small and can be difficult to insert the foot into the pouch when the bottom of the bag is full.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0 There is a large front tripod sleeve incorporated to the front of the bag that allows you to slide one of the tripod legs through and then use the tuck away tripod straps to secure the tripod in place. The issue with this design is that it is dependent on how big your tripod is, how full the bag is, and whether you have filled the front pouches with content.\u00a0I have some concerns regarding the possibility that the leg could damage the contents in your bag when you are removing or sliding the tripod leg in place especially when the sleeve is tight when the backpack is full.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The tripod legs usually exceeds the length of the sleeve and so you have the issue of the tripod moving up when it is sitting upright on the ground and sliding down when carrying it on your back.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The tripod strap buckle does not lock securely and loosens more with slight movement. This prevents your tripod from being securely strapped to your backpack.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n When the tripod straps are not in use, you can tuck away the straps inside the slit. There is a small pouch on each side of the slit that closes using Velcro. You can insert the straps inside the pouch to keep the strap from falling out. This is a feature that I initially overlooked and is actually quite thoughtful.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The same buckle locking issue mentioned with the tripod straps occurs with their top supporting strap that tightens or loosens the shoulder strap from the top. This is unlike the support straps that you see on the Osprey and Blackwolf travel backpacks, where it can lock into place and loosen when required. The Manfrotto attempt at this, is disappointing.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The front zippered pouch is useful and long enough to store items such as a selfie stick, though I would be cautious in using it when travelling in areas that are prone to theft.<\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> The backpack harness is comfortable with its generous shoulder and back support padding, and waist strap that allows you to carry heavier weight more easily as it allows the weight to be transferred more on your waist than your shoulders. This backpack harness feels similar to affordable travel backpacks I have tried but the angle of the shoulder straps is not well suited for my body shape. I feel the straps’ inside edges digging into my upper chest especially when the bag gets heavier, and the omission of a sternum strap places more pressure on your upper shoulders.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I purchased attachable sternum straps on Ebay for this issue, but this is a make-shift solution to a problem. The attachable sternum straps work OK, but it is inconvenient as there is a substantial amount of excess straps which you need to hide somehow and it also looks out of place on the bag! I would have preferred it if a sternum strap was made for this bag that could be tucked away when not in use.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The backpack comes with a self contained rain cover, meaning the raincover folds onto itself to create its own carry pouch. This actually takes a bit of space like a rolled up sock, when storing it in the backpack. I would have preferred it, if they had created a sleeve on the backpack’s body to store the raincover, similar to how the Lowepro AW raincover system works. Having the raincover stored on the outer body means that it does not have to mix amongst your expensive gear when you need to store it, after using it in the rain.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There is a custom shaped accessories pouch included with the backpack that is shaped to suit the configuration advertised for this backpack.\u00a0I was unable to use this pouch with my configuration due to its shape.<\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> The design of the Manfrotto Pro Light 3n1-36 Camera backpack is fairly similar to other camera backpacks on the market with its ability to have a top, front and side opening but with the option to be fully open like a suitcase, which includes the top section. This leads to one of several design flaws of this camera backpack in my opinion, as these flaws makes this more of a bag that needs to be handled with care, for your equipment\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Opening the front fully means you need to consider the equipment you have loaded at the top compartment in case it falls out, so that means you need to position the bag with the top section close to your body. When you decide to open the bottom front section, due to the flap opening from the bottom, means you also need to consider the equipment you have loaded in the bottom compartment in case it falls out. So, precaution must be taken when fully opening the front of the backpack while it is upright or laid flat on the ground.<\/p>\n Equipment may fall out when opening the top compartment of the backpack when it is laid flat on the ground.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bottom compartment opens from the bottom which may result in equipment falling out when accessing the backpack when it is upright.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The small front cover hinge being permanently on one side, means that you are unable to open the front in a way that you can at least mimic a jewellery box with the lid open\u00a0and all 4 side walls closed so that equipment in the top compartment would not fall out. Not having a hinge at all and making the front cover fully removable may be better, so that you can configure the way you open it using the zippers.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If the hinge was not there, you could open this further while only leaving the top section of the front cover where the top handle is, attached to the main body with the zipper, so that equipment would not fall out of the top compartment and you can access it like an open luggage.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> Another flaw is the design of the internal compartments. The felt material to allow for Velcro to be attached against the walls of the inner compartment or the dividers should cover more areas. This would allow for greater flexibility and possibly minimising any chances for smaller items to slide down the gaps within the internal front of the backpack, as the Velcro on the dividers could help minimise the gaps. Due to the size of the bag, the main dividers are long, which means it is important to have many options for the Velcro to be attached to the walls or other dividers to provide a more flexible and stronger structure.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Felt material is only at the mid area in the top compartment so Velcro is unable to attach where the pouches are. This restricts the ability to divide this area more securely and creatively, than straight down the middle. The pouch could have been made of felt material to add flexibility in dividing the top compartment.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n There is an unpredictable gap in the internal front that can lead to small items re-arranging inside the bag. Having Velcro on all sides of the dividers could help minimise the gap in the middle section of the backpack and strengthen the structure but not the bottom half because the felt material does not cover all of the inner front cover as shown below.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As I loaded more equipment in the compartments I had created using the dividers, the weakness in the structure started to become more obvious, especially in the middle section when some slots were left empty.<\/span><\/p>\n I was able to strengthen the divider framework by using a long divider from my previous imitation Lowepro Protactic 450 camera backpack which I attached to the bottom of the backpack and the two middle section dividers.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n I could then un-velcro the divider whenever I need access to the mid section.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> I do not understand their decision of using zippers which lacks a metal tab for the main opening. This is a frequently used compartment that deserves a durable zipper system in place.<\/p>\n Instead, they have used a rubber zipper tag, attached to nylon string, that is attached to a loop, and then attached to the zipper. Using this system is cumbersome as it is hard for your fingers to get a good grip of the zipper when needed, and using the zipper tag alone means you are relying on the durability of the string and rubber zipper tag. The zipper in general, does not slide smoothly and is susceptible to getting stuck especially around curves.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n From previous experience, zipper strings are not as durable as metal zipper tabs. Manfrotto should have included metal zipper tabs as well as the rubber zipper tags in their zippers, like in other backpacks such as the Blackwolf Cedar Breaks 65 litre backpack, as shown above.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The benefits of using the rubber zipper tags is that you could lock two tags together by inserting one over the other to prevent the main compartment from being opened. This makes unwanted access more difficult especially if you are travelling in areas prone to theft.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The zipper rails themselves are small with material lips both on top and underneath it and the zipper tends to get stuck as it travels down the rails. This may help with water resistance and protecting the inner contents from the zipper, but it adds to the issue of the zipper getting stuck as it travels. Maybe using a larger quality zipper system could help.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Whenever you use the zipper to open the bag, you must use some care if you want to open the bag smoothly. I can see with constant use that the nylon string or rubber zipper tags could eventually break, especially out in the field, where you may have limited time to be careful.<\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> The top handle on top of the backpack is a nice large size, but Manfrotto\u2019s decision to place the upper part of the handle very close to the main zipper is a major concern.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It looks as though most of the stress is focused on the upper handle area due to the angle and position of the top handle.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This can lead to the stitching or zipper deteriorating, or the zipper opening after many uses.\u00a0Please note that once this bag is filled, it is not light, so manufacturers should ensure that they are designing a backpack to withstand the weight otherwise, they should inform users of the bag\u2019s weight capacity.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n You could alternatively carry the bag with your thumb on the hanging strap but this is inconvenient and the stitching in this area is already poor in the copy I received.<\/p>\n Introduction<\/a> I am already observing strain on the debatable stitching in this top handle area which I have noticed in various areas of the backpack such as the body, dividers, nylon zipper tags, etc.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The hanging strap at the back of the backpack also shows weak stitching.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The amount of stitching issues I found with this Manfrotto backpack is in no way in comparison to the amount I found in the imitation Lowepro Protactic 450 Camera backpack I reviewed, but a backpack of this price and pedigree, should not have any to begin with especially in areas where durability is a main concern.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Manfrotto 3N1-36 Pro Light Camera\/Drone backpack is a good looking backpack with a good amount of room available to carry your gear. I am unable to recommend this camera backpack based on the price, design and the stitching. I think the design needs further refinement and that there are cheaper options in the market that could compete with this design, considering the weak points I have mentioned.\u00a0The poor stitching issues is a disappointment coming from a company like Manfrotto! It’s Australian distributor and authorised store reseller claims that this is normal Manfrotto quality.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This backpack was purchased from an authorized Manfrotto reseller here in Australia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
