I started to encounter issues that I never had when using video cameras such as;

shaky recorded footage that can be irritating when viewing,

short handheld recording durations due to sore shoulders and arms from holding the camera uncomfortably when shooting,

and running out of reasonable places to attach my camera accessories to such as a 7 inch external monitor, audio recorder and portable led light.

The problem I had with buying a shoulder rig was that they were expensive and it was another piece of gear I would have to carry with me if I decided to use one for a shoot. I researched online for a possible cheap DIY shoulder rig that I could build but I could not find one that would solve the issue I had with having to carry another extra piece of gear.

I found the solution to my problem while I was at a forest one day taking low angle photos with my camera on a travel tripod. I noticed that my tripod looked sort of similar in shape to a shoulder rig when one of the tripod legs were spread out. I decided to do some test video footage with the tripod as a make-shift shoulder rig and noticed some improvements in the shots as compared to my handheld shots for both standing still and moving. This is when I decided to improve on this make-shift tripod shoulder rig and design something that would enable me to convert my tripod to a more stable and comfortable make-shift shoulder rig with only a few pieces of additional items.

Tripod Shoulder Rig assembled.

Front of Tripod Shoulder Rig with camera accessories attached to the crossbar pole.

Counterweight locked into position using Spring Clamps.

Minimal Tripod Shoulder Rig kit.

Minimal parts needed to convert my tripod into a shoulder rig. This made it easy to use when converted to a camera shoulder rig. If I had known what I know now after developing the shoulder rig, I would have bought and used an aluminium travel tripod instead even though it is a little heavier because it allows me to attach the crossbar pole and U-bolts on the actual tripod leg poles themselves rather than at the metal joiner. It would have given me more mounting position options for the crossbar pole which is useful when I am trying to achieve maximum comfort and best camera accessories positioning. Attaching the crossbar and U-bolt to the carbon fibre leg poles will damage them which I discovered when I first attached the crossbar pole to them and used the shoulder rig.

There are various brands of travel tripods out there and they all look and function pretty similar but I guess one of the most important aspect when converting a travel tripod to a shoulder rig is the angle of the tripod legs when spread out. I was lucky that my travel tripod legs spread at angles that suits my body but other tripods may not be the same.

16mm rod

Sample

I use this rod as a crossbar pole that locks the two front tripod legs together that I use as my shoulder rig handles. This pole is also used to mount my camera accessories such as external light, external monitor, audio recorder, etc.. I can attach magic arms with clamps to this pole to allow customisation of the position of my camera accessories. I used a spare 16mm aluminium rod I had which were bought from my local hardware store but any other similar rods would do like a curtain rod.

U-bolts set – 25mm (2)

Sample

These U-bolts are used to attach the crossbar pole to the tripod legs or joiner. The size of the U-bolt will depend on the size of the crossbar pole and the shape of the part of the tripod the crossbar pole is attaching to. I positioned one for the front and the back of where I would like the counterweight to be positioned on the tripod leg. This also acts as a hook so that the tripod leg does not slide off my shoulder. These can be bought at a local hardware store and come in various shapes and sizes. I picked one that provided sufficient grip on my tripod leg so that the weight did not move and big enough to hook onto my shoulder. I noticed that these pinch your shoulder slightly when the shoulder rig hangs off your shoulder and it made my shoulders sore the next day. I guess it is to be expected since it is not shaped to my shoulder and it is not padded. Something I may need to revise in the future to improve comfort.

Plastic gym weight

Sample list

This is the counterweight to my camera shoulder rig that prevents it from being too front heavy. If the weight is too light as a counter balance, I can either add a heavier weight or extend the tripod leg of my counterweight further so that it’s further away from my back. Another option of counterweight is to attach your camera bag instead but any sort of fashioned counter weight could do, even a shopping bag filled with sand tied to the tripod leg would work. One thing I noticed though is that the further down the bag is from the tripod leg causes the bag to swing when you turn with the shoulder rig which is unwanted momentum when you are trying to be accurate with your movement.

Gyms weights can be purchased at any fitness equipment store. I prefer to use the plastic or rubber version because I found it doesn’t damage things as bad as metal weights when dropped. Also it is not prone to rust.

Pipe insulation

Sample

These are used as shoulder padding for my shoulder rig. I attach this to the tripod leg that mounts on my shoulder. I found that this is not as effective as I would like it to be especially if you have a lot of camera gear mounted on your shoulder rig and a heavy counterweight attached. Eventually I would like to build a thicker and more contoured shape shoulder pad for my shoulder that I could attach to the tripod leg. At the moment, using the shoulder rig fully loaded with camera gear and using this pipe insulation as shoulder padding for long periods of use is like someone digging their knuckles into your shoulder or doing squats at the gym with a weighted bar. The next day my shoulder felt bruised and sore. I may try wearing a thick jacket than just a thin shirt to see if I can minimize the effects of soreness and bruising when using the shoulder rig.

Heatshrink (various sizes)

Sample

I used various size heatshrink on the crossbar pole and U-bolt to prevent damaging my tripod and to provide better grip when attached.

Pencil case (large)

Sample

I used a large pencil case as a carry pouch for all my tripod shoulder rig part. The amount of effort needed to hold the weight of the DSLR camera and U-Flycam Stabilizer with one hand, while the other hand tried to stabilize the stabilizer from swinging became tiring quickly. I have used the U-Flycam Stabilizer with a Panasonic HDC-700-SD camcorder before and produced better results than with using the DSLR. This was probably because the camcorder was a lot lighter in weight, smaller, I could control the swinging of the U-Flycam better and the camcorder had image stabilisation built in.

This test proved to me that weight plays an important role in achieving a smooth shot and if I have to load my other camera accessories such as an external monitor, audio recorder, portable light or use a heavier lens for a shoot, I would definitely use my DIY Tripod Shoulder Rig out of the three techniques since it distributes the heavier weight better and provides points for my camera accessories to attach to.

:: Go to Introduction

:: Go to Parts list

:: Go to Pros, Cons and Conclusion

:: Go to Introduction

:: Go to Parts list

:: Go to In use and comparison video samples

Pros and Cons, and Conclusion

Pros

Costs

This is cheaper than buying a commercial shoulder rig if you already have the tripod or plan to buy one for double duties.

Build difficulty

This is very easy to build and use and doesn’t require much parts.

Flexibility

This camera shoulder rig still retains its ability to be a tripod or monopod. You do not need to carry two main pieces of camera gear around with you but just the shoulder rig conversion parts.

It is adjustable and has various holding positions.

You are able to attach various camera accessories to it using the crossbar pole. Eg. monitors, portable light, audio recorders, clamps, etc.

The tripod head can be interchangeable with other tripod heads.

In use

This shoulder rig works like any other shoulder rig that I have seen. It improves stability as compared to handheld shots.

Multiple holding positions on the front tripod legs for comfort.

The pole extension for the tripod head that is in the middle of the tripod can be used as a handle for single hand held shots whilst your other hand do other things like focusing or adjusting settings on the camera or audio recorder. It does get tiring quickly when you have a lot of camera gear mounted and you are using the Tripod Shoulder Rig with one hand only.

There is not much items needed to convert a tripod using this set-up.

It gave better balance and grip for handheld type shooting.

Cons

Costs

Not cheaper if you have to go out and buy a tripod just for the purpose of converting it into a shoulder rig. It is also time consuming to build and does not look as professional as a commercial camera shoulder rig.

Comfort

After prolong use my hands, arms and shoulder do get tired, even when alternating positions but I would say that using a shoulder rig is better than going handheld only. The issue with the shoulder pad and clamp as a shoulder hook is a major issue for prolong use. As mentioned before, using it on your shoulder with the pipe insulation as shoulder pads is like knuckles digging into your shoulder after a while or doing squats at the gym using a weighted bar. Also using a spring clamp as a shoulder hook causes soreness and pinching, but both these issues could be minimized with better padding and design.

Looks

My DIY Tripod Shoulder Rig looks pretty good to me, I have no shame in using it out in public or with clients. Some professionals may feel the opposite and feel embarrassed to use this device because it is obvious that it is a customised tripod being used as a shoulder rig, but the question is, does looks really matter if it can produce the similar results as a commercial version?

Conclusion

I found converting my tripod into a shoulder rig to be the most costs effective way of obtaining a shoulder rig in my set-up. It was quick and easy to make and it improved my handheld shots. The shoulder rig gave me the ability to shoot for longer periods at a time and it provided space for me to attach my camera accessories to.
