Color Correction Filters with various Light Sources and White Balance settings – Led Lights, Fluorescent Daylight Globe

Observation

Matching lights using filters or post processing.

I noticed that the Flourescent Globe (5500K) and Wansen W160 Led Light with the camera white balance set at 5500K produced similar greenish cast whilst the YN600 produced a more reddish magenta cast.

I have added test results when adding Plusgreen filters to the YN600 to demonstrate that it produces different green cast results when applying the filters.

I remember talking to some store staff who insisted that all I needed was Plusgreen or Minusgreen Color Correction filters to match lights with a green cast but this is not true as shown in my tests. There are different variables that must be taken into consideration when matching lights with a green cast and I do not believe there is a one shoe fits all solution. You may need to combine different filters to produce the desired lighting results to match.

I usually use the Yongnuo Yn600 and Wansen W160 led lights together because of their portability unlike the Flourescent globes so I thought I would try to find the closest matching lighting results of my portable lights. Now when I need to use these two lights together, I have a general idea on how to set my lights with filters to get the best similar lighting results when the camera is set at 5500K White Balance.

I also wanted to see the results of using the standard tungsten filters that came with the led lights and the Rosco 5500K-> 3200K filters and compared their differences with the camera white balance setting set at 3200K.

Both produced too much of a different result to use at the same time and this is probably due to their different ratings of 5500K(YN600) and 5600K(W160) and manufacturing differences and qualities.

I wanted to explore using the closest lighting results and post process it to try to match both lights footage.

I was able to match it to a point that I found acceptable which gave me an option if I ever decide to use these two lights together as the only light source with the camera set at 3200K white balance.
